“God created Mauritius and then Heaven”. This mesmerising place is a tropical
paradise for people to spend a memorable vacation. Mauritius consists
of two islands. By
far the biggest one is known as Mauritius whose capital
city, Port Louis is located here. Then there is a smaller island some
500 km away, called Rodrigues.
Mauritius rests in gorgeous isolation in the bosom of the warmest ocean
of all, the Indian Ocean, bounded by Africa, India and Australia. The
country is ornamented with lovely bougainvillea and flame trees, violet
moonscaped mountains, deep craters, wild waterfalls, rainbows and shooting
stars, villages hidden in lush coastal vegetation, plateau towns with
charming old colonial houses, flowers and trees growing out of the red
earth in striking hues and everywhere there is green and golden cover
of sugarcane.
Mauritius is also blessed with some of the most enchanting beaches, a
large scope for shopping and warm, friendly people to welcome their visitors.
Mauritius doesn't only offer wonderful beaches, also the inland region

Attractions in the North of Mauritius
• Pamplemousses botanic garden: - One of
the most famous botanic gardens in the tropics with
hundreds of plants. The water-lilies Victoria Amazonica and the manor
house Château de Mon Plaisir (1735) are remarkable. Another attraction
is unusual Talipot palm which flourishes only every sixty years and dies
afterwards. Come on time! Ask for a guide to lead you through the park.
• Grand
Bay - The heart of the island’s nightlife. Also a first choice shopping
and leisure destination.
• Pereybere - A public beach very popular among tourists especially for
its shopping facilities, restaurants and pubs. Watersports are also available.
• Mont Choisy - The longest and largest public beach in Mauritius. It
is much appreciated for its fine white sand and the facilities has to
offer.
• Balaclava Ruins - The ruins of the old Balaclava estate.
• The Triolet Shivala - The longest village on the island, Triolet, is
also home of the biggest Hindu temple, the Maheswarnath. •

• The Waterpark Leisure Village - A water park located on Coastal road,

• Domaine du Chasseur - Experiencing the

a variety of animals including the Java deer, wild boar, Kestrel and monkeys.

• Domaine L'Ylang Ylang - A plantation of ylang ylang trees located at
Anse Jonchée few kilometres of Vieux Grand Port.. A visit of the plantation
is a must for every nature-lover. Lovely situated restaurant.
• Bois Chéri: visit the tea production, enjoy the mauritian cuisine in
a colonial house build 1819.
• La Vanilla Crocodile Park - Park with original vegetation in a beautiful
environment. More than a
thousand Nile crocodiles living in a secure enviroment. The place is situated
in a luxuriant tropical forest with rare vegetation, banana and palm trees.
monkeys, flying foxes, turtles, deer, tenrecs, giant tortoises, bats,
wild pigs, geckos, and mangooses are the other attractions.The restaurant
is recommendable: crocodile meat is served.
• Ile aux Aigrettes - For a genuine ecotourism trip you must visit this
Nature Reserve situated at about 800 meters off the south-east coast of
Mauritius.
• Dutch Ruins - The ruins of the first Dutch fortifications located at
Vieux Grand Port, the oldest settlements in Mauritius.
• Mahebourg - One of the main fishing centres where you can find the Naval
Museum of Mauritius.
• Souillac - A village with several historical remains and the coral-built
“La Nef” house of famous Mauritian poet Robert Edward Hart.

West of Mauritius
• Chamarel (coloured earth) - The remarkably seven-coloured earth is believed
to have been created by
volcanic rocks that cooled at different temperatures, the earths form
here beautiful patterns of color in the exposed hillsides. Chamarel waterfall.
• Casela Bird Park - Home to about 140 bird species and over 2500 birds
from all over the world. There are also deer, tortoises, kangaroos, tigers,
monkeys etc.
• Yemen - Java deers, wild boars, monkeys, mongoose and many other animals,
birds or exotic plants can be found in this natural park.
• Martello Towers - This five small defensive forts was builded by the
British Empire at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The one, near the La
Preneuse beach has been restored in 1999 and is now open for visitors.
• The Tamarin's Salt Pans
Attractions in the inland
region of Mauritius
• Black River Gorges National Park - Black River Gorges National Park
with its original jungle and bird life which exists only in Mauritius
(the Pink Pigeon, the Echo Parakeet and the Mauritius Kestrel; all very
rare species). Several walking-tours; Alexander Waterfalls It is highly
recommended for its spectacular scenery, endemic plants and some of the
rarest bird species.
• Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) - Resting within the crater of an extinct
volcano in the Black River
Georges National Park, this natural lake is the most sacred pilgrim place
for Hindus living in Mauritius. worth seeing specially when the feast
Maha Shivaratree is celebrated there. You are welcome to the ceremonies
held over there. Take off your shoes before entering the temples!
• Domaine les Pailles - Experience the original Mauritius : A nature park
and cultural center covering more than 3,000 acres. Traditional sugar
production, Landrover safaris and animation for children. The restaurants
are part of the best of Mauritius.Casino of the luxury class.
• Le Val Nature Park - A natural reserve situated at Cluny in the Grand
Port District.It is beautifully and quietly situated in the southeast
with fresh water prawns farming, monkeys, Anthurium farm and more
Eureka - EUREKA: One of the most beautiful colonial villas of the island,
It's a unique creole residence built in 1830 in a magnificient garden
surrounded by the waterfalls of Moka River and the Moka Range. Today it's
a museum with restaurant with country typical cuisine.
• Rochester Falls: enjoy a refreshing bath; near Souillac with charming
vantage points
• Trou aux Cerfs in Curepipe: extinct volcano since a long time. From
there you have an excellent view over the whole island.
Port Louis : the capital of the
island of Mauritius
Port Louis, the capital and main port of
Mauritius, was founded by the French governor, Mahe de Labourdonnais in
1735. The harbour is nestled within a semi-circle of picturesque mountains.
This alluring town has restored its past glory and elegance. One of the
main sights of Mauritius is the market with the fruits and vegetables
piled up artistically. Just opposite is the bazaar where you can purchase
souvenirs and spices at favourable prices. At a close distance from the
main square there are some exquisite French colonial buildings; especially
the Government house and the Municipal Theatre, which were built during
the 18th century. Besides these, there are two eye catching Cathedrals,
Anglican and Catholic and a mosque too. The Supreme Court, natural history
museum, the Worldwide Masks museum are also present in the capital town.
Visit also
of these places:
•The small museum of natural history, the Jummah Mosque, the •Cathedral
Saint Louis, the race course Champs de Mars; Caudan Waterfront with its
restaurants, shops, cinemas und bars: mainly on weekends the new meeting
point for Mauritians and tourists. Rove through Chinatown , go for a stroll
along Rue Desforges (S.S. Ramgoolam) and •Rue Royal. Pay a visit to the
excellent restaurants.
•Père Laval : from 1841 to 1864 missionary in Mauritius. His grave in
Saint Croix isn't a pilgrim place only for Christians.
Who likes to hike, shouldn't fail to climb the Signal Mountain since one
has a beautiful view of town from there.
